I just read this on reddit and instantly agreed.
Listen, I don’t give a shit about politicians’ sex lives, let them fuck whoever they want. The only disgrace is that this is the only political issue that ever causes an uproar.
But within the first few comments I realised how quick I had been to form an opinion without considering the implications. Here are a few issues to examine.
- He sent people to jail for a crime he was committing.
- Why not focus on the part where he stole 80k from taxpayers instead of the sex scandal?
- He jeopardized the people of New York by allowing himself to be put in a position where a prostitute, pimp or organized crime boss could easily blackmail him.
I now realise why this story is important, however I still feel that the emphasis is on the sex rather than the implications. It’s also a great shame that this story is having so much airplay compared to other situations around the world (links between Saddam and Al Qaeda, Iraq, Bush’s torture policy) that are infinitely more prevalent.
